The Future of Work: Skills, Culture and Digital Transformation

Technology changes what work is needed. Culture decides whether anyone will do it differently.

Every transformation program is a workforce program wearing different clothes. The software is the easy half.

Skills follow the work, not the plan

Training built before the new process exists teaches the wrong things. Build the process, run it with a small group, then teach what that group actually needed.

Middle management is the constraint

Front-line teams adopt quickly when their supervisors do. Programs that brief executives and end users while skipping the layer between them stall in exactly that layer.

Make the old way harder

If the previous process still works, most people will keep using it. Retiring the old path is usually the single most effective adoption lever available.

Hire for adaptability

Specific tool knowledge dates within a couple of years. The ability to learn a new system without needing to be walked through it does not.

Keep the feedback loop short

Weekly contact with the people doing the work catches design mistakes while they are still cheap to fix.
